Esports is identified as a key market within the Southeast Asia region, becoming a part of mainstream entertainment, with over 60% of Southeast Asian gamers drawn to esports. This is the fastest-growing region for gaming in the world, with approximately 310 million gamers spread across Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and The Philippines.
Within our nation, esports has captivated the hearts of Malaysians spanning all age groups, with a special resonance among the youth. The typical esports viewer in Malaysia falls within the age range of 18 to 34 years, with a concentration of viewers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Sabah. As Malaysia sets its sights on establishing itself as a preeminent esports hub within the region, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, through Esports Integrated, is at the forefront of propelling the advancement of esports across the nation.
Empowering young people in esports
One important aspect of empowering young people in esports is giving them access to education and training programmes that can help them develop the skills needed to succeed in the industry. This could include programmes focusing on game design, event management, and other esports-related topics. This is accomplished by ESI through capacity-building programmes such as ESI Masterclass. ESI also has a gaming hub equipped with the latest gaming equipment, allowing enthusiasts to train their skills.
Creating opportunities and exposures
It is indeed critical to create opportunities for competition and exposure. ESI accomplishes this through organising the Malaysia Esports League and Malaysia Esports Championship. We are focusing on developing a strong and dynamic esports ecosystem in Malaysia that benefits all stakeholders by providing opportunities, essential resources, and support.
ESPORTS INTEGRATED
Esports Integrated (ESI) is an initiative to create a vibrant, sustainable esports ecosystem, powered by Impact Integrated, under the purview of KBS. ESI has six core functions, each function serves a key role in overcoming the challenges faced by the industry and facilitating the creation of a vibrant and sustainable esports ecosystem.
To nurture growth and create more opportunities in esports, we believe in catalysing an ecosystem that is sustainable and vibrant. This means that while we care about nurturing the esports industry and creating opportunities for athletes, event organisers, and game developers, at the same time we will ensure that there are guidelines and structures put in place to protect all industry players.
